Peace, Be Still.

I’ve spent a lot of time planting seeds that never bear fruit. I think many of us get in this mindset where we just have to be going. Often it doesn’t really matter where we’re going, as long as we go. We assume that busyness is important and makes us productive, when in reality there are so many fruitless pursuits which we just dump our time into. It’s kind of tragic.

I believe that those who believe in Jesus and that he died for them will live for eternity, so time in that sense really isn’t in short supply. However, we do have a limited amount of time HERE and NOW. We aren’t going to live in this fallen world, and if you want to make a positive impact on people who are struggling and in need of the light that you carry, you need to stop using that time haphazardly and direct our efforts with focus and discipline and in prayer.

God says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” He tells us to be still. I think that’s a lesson many of us have forgotten or never learned. When was the last time you just stayed still in the presence of your Creator, waiting for Him to speak?

You see, we typically don’t do stuff like that. Most of us can’t sit still for longer than a few moments without some kind of sensory input, at least not without practice. And generally we gravitate toward the input that involves the things in which we’ve invested our time, effort, and emotion. TV, anyone?

And the sad thing is that it really is the screen that holds many of our hearts. Where is your heart? If you’re not sure, look at how you spend your time. Do you spend any of your time with God? I know I didn’t for a very long time. I would pray over meals, sometimes, and when I needed something, but that was pretty much it. But God isn’t just there to make sure we have a good day. He wants to lovingly invade every single part of our lives and flow in love through us and out into the world.

One of my favorite rappers, NF, has a very germane few lines I want to share:

“God is not a crutch, you can use Him when you wanna,
You only look to heaven when you going through some drama,
And when you going through some problems,
And that’s the only time you call Him,
I guess I don’t understand that life; wonder why?
‘Cause I’m all in, till the day I die!”

We fill our lives with mundane, inefficient sedulity in the hopes of obtaining some thing the world tells us is worth our time and effort, all to realize in the end that God is Who we should have been focusing on. It all begins and ends with Him, and no amount of doing things for the sake of those things will make you look better in His eyes.

And it won’t make you more successful in your endeavors here on Earth, either. Only intentional, focused effort produces results. I’ve been the king of working for the sake of work and not toward the positive resolution of a problem or the accomplishment of a goal, and I can tell you how ridiculous it all is once you stop, be still, and take it before the God of all creation.

So stop working for a moment and check your course. Correct your heading so that you are on the path which God has set out for you and make certain that your efforts aren’t pointless. Do good in this world. Do what God put you here to do.
